Why it works?
Mathseeds has been created by a highly experienced team of teachers, educational writers, animators and web developers, the same team that created Reading Eggs and Reading Eggspress. The programme teaches early mathematical skills in highly structured lessons, and encourages children to learn because it’s motivating and because it’s so much fun. Each child progresses through the online lessons at their own pace and is rewarded for their achievements. All lessons and activities can be repeated as often as necessary; so that children can revise and consolidate skills. Mathematical knowledge and the ability to solve problems are essential skills that all children need to be successful at school. Mathseeds makes this possible with a programme that can be used anytime and anywhere there is a computer or an iPad.
How a Lesson Works
Introduce and model the concept
Each lesson begins with an interactive animation, led by one or more of the five key characters. Each new concept is modelled in a way that is both entertaining and educational. The child then completes a wide range of activities where they practice the new skill in different ways. These lessons are carefully paced using a range of short, playful activities that engage children as they build confidence in their newly acquired skills. Vibrant animation, playful songs and multiple rewards keep children motivated to learn while they have fun.
Nine different activities follow on from the main lesson. These activities present the content in many different ways so that children learn to use and apply each new skill in a variety of situations. Early activities focus on numbers, counting and shape recognition. Later lessons build skills in addition, subtraction and measurement, and then early multiplication and division are introduced.
Each lesson ends with an e-book. The book reinforces the concept that has been taught in the lesson. These books are an entertaining way to ensure that children understand the language of mathematics. The book can be read independently or children can listen to the narration as they read along.
The pet hatches
Children are rewarded for their efforts with a cute e-pet that hatches from an acorn and becomes part of their online collection. Each e-pet is unique and children will love watching the funny animation that introduces their new pet. Each of the Mathseeds maps depicts a different environment. These range from Map One’s garden and Map Two’s farm to later maps savannah, forests and arctic areas. The hatching pets are baby animals that could be found in that environment.
Motivation and Rewards
Children learn best when they are having fun and Mathseeds aims to make learning maths skills easy and enjoyable for every child. The programme is highly interactive and engaging with lots of activities, rewards and games that encourage young children to stay focused and learn.
Children are rewarded with golden acorns on completion of every lesson and activity. These golden acorns can later be spent on a variety of items for their tree house or personal avatar. At the end of a lesson, children are rewarded with a new e-pet. These pets can be chosen to be part of the treehouse.
At the end of each map (5 lessons), children complete a multiple-choice quiz to assess what they have learnt. If they pass, they are rewarded with a certificate that can be printed out as a reminder of their success and achievement.
